Amsterdam's sights sit in three distinct rings, and knowing which ring you are in saves a great deal of walking.
The medieval core, between Centraal Station and the Dam, is the oldest and most crowded ground: the Oude Kerk, the Royal Palace, the Nieuwe Kerk and the red-light district compressed into a few hundred metres. The canal belt around it is the seventeenth-century plan, and the attraction there is the fabric itself -- the Anne Frank House and the canal house museums are set into a residential district rather than gathered in a quarter.
The Museumplein, just outside the belt, holds the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk within a few minutes of one another, with the Concertgebouw on the same square and the Vondelpark beside it.
Nearly all of it is walkable, and where it is not, the tram is. The listings below follow that geography rather than any ranking.
