Learn about Strahan

Set on the edge of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area on the island’s wild west coast, Strahan is a picturesque harbor-side village with a fascinating past. It lies on the shores of Macquarie Harbor and serves as the gateway to the Franklin–Gordon Wild Rivers National Park, as well as the former convict settlement at Sarah Island.

Wander through the town and admire the restored Strahan Village cottages that are set behind a white picket fence. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants to dine at, as well as shops selling artisan wares. From the People’s Park in Strahan, it’s an easy stroll to Hogarth Falls, with the opportunity to catch a glimpse of elusive platypus.

Join a boat cruise to explore the stunning Gordon River, lined with untouched temperate rainforests. Enjoy a buffet lunch of gourmet Tasmanian fare on board, then stop at the former penal settlement of Sarah Island where Huon pines were once felled by convicts to build boats.
