Visiting Toulouse

Changed
At the heart of the Midi-Pyrénées region of France lies Toulouse – a city holding a 2000 year old history as an ancient Roman settlement while currently being France’s largest aeronautical centre, housing Airbus, which is the largest employer in the region. However, in the process of urbanization, it has not lost any of its old-world charm. Due to its Romanesque red brick buildings, it has also earned the moniker, Ville Rose or the Pink City.

Life revolves around The Capitole, also known as the City Hall - an imposing building with splendidly decorated rooms and beautiful gardens. Toulouse is besides the Garonne River and the Canal du Midi runs through the city. 240 kilometers long, this canal, classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, has shady tree path along it, making it a pleasant stretch for both bikers and walkers.

It is also necessary to visit the Saint-Sernin Basilica, a Romanesque brick building, built in the 12th century. Home to the crypt of Saint Saturnin, it is considered to be an important stage on the Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle pilgrimage. There are also several museums that have masterpiece collections related to art and several Roman art treasures. Kids can be amused with the Cité de l'Espace, a science themed park, displaying models of latest spacecrafts. Foie grass is one of the most popular dishes worldwide belongs to this region. Gastronomes will surely appreciate the dish.

Toulouse being a small city can be explored on foot. One can also get around by using the very efficient public metro transport.
