Greccio's attractions are a sanctuary, a walking route and a view.
The Sanctuary of Greccio is the reason the town is known internationally — a memorial of Saint Francis, founded by him, on the spur where he staged the first nativity scene in December 1223.
The Cammino di Francesco passes through, and arriving on foot is the way the place was historically reached.
The medieval town above carries what survives of a fortified castle: the remains of the old buildings show that Greccio became a fortified medieval castle surrounded by walls and protected by six fortified towers, before the soldiery of Frederick II destroyed it in 1242.
And the position itself is an attraction — 705 metres on a spur of the Monti Sabini, overhanging the Rieti valley.
