Macedonia Country Guide


The Republic of Macedonia, Europe, lies in the western side of the ancient Kingdom of Macedonia. It is the southern Balkan Peninsula that is under the present Macedonia. Aegean Sea and Aliakmon River lie on the south, Lake Prespa, Lake Ohrid, Crni Drim River and the Shar Mountains lie on the west and Skopska Crna Gora Mountain lie on the northern side of Macedonia. The eastern side is bounded by the Pirin Mountains.

The capital of Macedonia is Skopje and is the largest city in the Republic. It is strategically located on the south Balkan route that goes from Athens to Belgrade next to the Vardar River.

Ohrid, also known as the city of lakes, is a storehouse of Macedonian ancient ruins. It is a sublime town that many tourist visit to experience the Macedonian culture. The town is also popular for its café bars and entertaining nightclubs that account for the vibrant night life. Home to the Galicica National Park, Ohrid’s lake and historical buildings have placed it in the UNESCO’s World Inheritance list.

Perhaps the most famous Macedonian is Alexander the Great (356-323 BC). The Museum of Macedonia has permanent exhibitions that speak about its history and culture. The Botanical Gardens in the Balkan Peninsula are home to numerous flora and fauna species.

Wineries in Macedonia produce some of the most exotic wines. Lepovo Hill is the chief grapes growing area in Macedonia that lies in Tikves, which is the main wine region here.

Skopje Airport is the international airport that is well connected by the European nations.
