Comino is an island in Malta, and the third largest in the area of ??the Maltese archipelago. It is located between the islands of Malta and Gozo, isolated from them by two straits: that of Malta, 1,500 meters wide, and that of Gozo, 850 meters wide.
Its name comes from the word cumin (kemmuna in Maltese), one of the few plants that manages to grow on its arid soil.
Administratively dependent on the municipality of G?ajnsielem, in the south-east of Gozo, it has only a handful of permanent residents besides the tourists who stay at the Blue Lagoon hotel, located on the island's west coast.
Today, Comino is also an animal sanctuary and a natural reserve.
