Keep a little mystery in your trip planning: Explorer Picture Mode shows a stylized version of every place instead of the real photo, so you can go by the description and reviews first and picture it your own way -- reveal the real photo any time by flipping the switch off, or just for one place at a time from its own page.

Montenegro Country Guide

Overview

Changed
The country of Montenegro is located on the Southeastern region of Europe and north of the Adriatic Sea. Its name, literally translated to “Black Mountain”, was first bestowed to the country in 1276. It has been said that the name was taken from Mount Lovcen that was almost black in color.

The country of Montenegro prides itself to be a home to some of the most tranquil and breathtaking landscapes in this part of Europe. These were sculpted by nature over a slow and steady period of many centuries as the glaciers that formed on the Balkan Peninsula during the last Ice Age eroded. If you are planning a trip to Montenegro, make sure that you take some time to visit the Tara River Canyon. Also known as the Tara River Gorge, this canyon provides some of the best white water rafting spots in the world. There are also about 80 caves which you can explore with the help of a guided tour. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Tara River Canyon is also recognized as the second largest canyon in the entire world.

Tara River Canyon is situated within Durmitor National Park where travelers are treated to a wide variety of activities all year long. During the summer months, travelers can enjoy camping near any of the 18 glacial lakes in the park or go mountain climbing and trekking. In the winter months, the park comes alive as tourists and locals head for the slopes to enjoy winter sports and activities.
