Nord-Pas-de-Calais got its name from the two departments that make up the region, which are the departments of Nord and Pas-de-Calais. It is located on the northern part of the country of France and shares its borders with the country of Belgium. A former region of the Southern Netherlands, Nord-Pas-de-Calais became a part of France in the year 1678. Today, the province of Nord-Pas-de-Calais is the country’s fourth most densely populated regions in the country. Approximately 4 million people reside in the region. That is about 7% of the total population of the country.
Because of its close proximity to the United Kingdom, Nord-Pas-de-Calais is usually the first destination visited by travellers coming from England and other regions in the UK. As such, many consider Nord-Pas-de-Calais as the gateway to the United Kingdom and France.
