Introduction
Delhi is a 1,483-square-kilometre National Capital Territory, not another name for its smaller planned district of New Delhi. Its visitor landscape stretches from the Mughal streets of Shahjahanabad to Sultanate settlements along the Ridge, Yamuna-side tomb gardens and the ceremonial avenues of the modern capital.
People come for three World Heritage properties, living religious traditions, national institutions, food and the visible remains of successive cities. The territory works best as a set of corridors rather than a checklist. Metro lines handle many long transfers, but historic approaches and the final kilometre often need walking, an auto-rickshaw or a taxi.

Frequently asked questions
Are Delhi and New Delhi the same place? No. New Delhi is the planned capital district within the larger National Capital Territory of Delhi. Visitor itineraries routinely cross that boundary.
How many days does Delhi need? Four days allow one Old Delhi day, one Nizamuddin day, one Mehrauli or southern-monuments day and one planned-capital day. Five gives useful flexibility.
When is the best time? February and March offer the strongest general balance. Winter is cooler but can bring fog and poor air; May and June are extremely hot; July through September is wetter.
Does Delhi have one historic centre? No. Shahjahanabad is the dense Mughal core, but earlier capitals and major tombs lie south of it. Plan by district and period.
Do I need a car? Not for a normal visit. Metro plus walking within districts and an occasional auto-rickshaw or taxi is usually more practical.
Which railway station is Delhi station? There is no single visitor terminal. New Delhi, Delhi Junction, Hazrat Nizamuddin and Anand Vihar serve different trains.
Is the territory step-free? The airport and many Metro facilities provide assistance, but the final footway and historic entrance vary. Verify the complete route.
Should I worry about air quality? Check the official AQI, especially from autumn through winter. Conditions vary by day, so follow current health advice.
