How to get around New Delhi

Getting around

Use the Metro for long cross-city journeys and walk only within a coherent district. The network connects the airport, New Delhi Railway Station, central government areas, markets and many southern neighbourhoods, but not every monument entrance aligns with a station exit.

As checked 8 October 2026, ordinary Delhi Metro fares run from ₹11 to ₹64 Monday through Saturday, based on distance. Sunday and national-holiday tiers differ. Use the official journey planner for the exact fare, line change, first or last train and station exit.

The Airport Express connects New Delhi with Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal 3 and the airport corridor. It is usually the clearest option when the accommodation is convenient to New Delhi station or an interchange; a taxi may suit luggage, a group or a destination far from the line.

Auto-rickshaws, taxis and app-booked cars solve final gaps. Agree or confirm the basis of the fare before departure, match app-booked vehicle details and use the airport's official prepaid or app-taxi facilities. Road time remains unpredictable at peak periods and around official events.

Walking conditions vary sharply. Kartavya Path and large gardens have broad public paths, while Old Delhi lanes, multilane crossings, broken footways and monument approaches can be difficult. For step-free travel, check the exact station exit and site entrance; a lift at the station does not guarantee an accessible final route.

Metro

Plan from station entrance to site gate, not station name to neighbourhood name. Interchanges and large stations add walking, while the wrong exit can place a divided road between you and the destination. Keep enough balance or the appropriate ticket medium for the full route.

Airport

Airport Express serves the New Delhi–airport corridor, including Terminal 3. Other terminals and hotels may require a transfer. Confirm the terminal before leaving and request airline wheelchair assistance in advance when needed.

Rail stations

New Delhi Railway Station, Delhi Junction, Hazrat Nizamuddin and Anand Vihar are different terminals in different parts of the metropolis. Read the station name and code on the ticket; “Delhi” alone is not a safe planning assumption.

Road transport

Use auto-rickshaws or taxis for targeted last legs rather than repeated cross-city trips. At the airport, choose an official prepaid or app-based service. During Republic Day, Independence Day or a high-security movement, follow current police diversions.

Walking and accessible travel

Delhi Airport provides wheelchair assistance through airlines, priority lanes, accessible washrooms, lifts and other support. Metro and monument accessibility is less uniform. ASI requires accessibility improvements where feasible, but historic fabric and approach routes still vary; verify each segment.
