Introduction
Goa is India's smallest state by area, set between Maharashtra, Karnataka and the Arabian Sea. Its 3,702 square kilometres include a coast, broad estuaries, river islands, laterite uplands and forested Western Ghats foothills. Panaji is the capital, while the Mandovi and Zuari organise much of the central landscape.
The state is more varied than its beach reputation suggests. Old Goa holds a seven-part World Heritage property, active churches and the material legacy of Portuguese rule. Temple settlements, Konkani-speaking communities, markets, food traditions, mangroves and eastern sanctuaries form equally important parts of the region.

Frequently asked questions
Is Goa a city? No. Goa is an Indian state. Panaji is its capital, and the visitor landscape includes many towns, villages, beaches and protected areas.
How many days does Goa need? Five to seven days allow one coastal base, Panaji and Old Goa, plus an inland or forest day. A short weekend usually covers only one zone.
Which Goa airport should I use? Compare Dabolim and Manohar at Mopa against the final accommodation. Mopa favours much of the north; Dabolim is often more convenient for central and southern areas.
When is the best time? November through February offers the most reliable dry-weather balance. Late December and early January are busier and usually costlier.
Is the monsoon a bad time? Not necessarily. June through September suits green landscapes, food and slower stays, but rough seas and heavy rain change beach, road and forest plans.
Is Goa only a beach destination? No. Old Goa's World Heritage churches, Panaji, temple settlements, markets, mangroves and Western Ghats forests are central to the state.
Do I need a car? Not for every trip. Buses and targeted taxis can connect main towns, but a private transfer or vehicle helps with dispersed beaches and forest edges.
What language is spoken? Konkani is official. Marathi has specified official uses, and English and Hindi are common in many visitor settings.
