Goa

Practical information for visiting Goa

Connectivity & Internet

Air: Goa has two international airports: Dabolim and Manohar at Mopa. Their positions make the right choice dependent on the final coast or inland base.

Rail: Trains call at several Goa stations rather than one state terminal. Use the exact station on the ticket and arrange the last road leg.

Road: Highways connect Goa with Maharashtra and Karnataka. KTCL buses serve major towns, while local transfers complete many beach and forest journeys.

Digital access: Cellular data helps with routes and vehicle checks, but save the accommodation address, map pin and important contacts offline before rural or forest travel.

Stay safe (2026 security update)

Use ordinary precautions in crowded beaches, markets, festivals, nightlife areas and transport hubs. Keep valuables secure and do not leave a phone or bag unattended on the sand.

Swim only in designated areas and follow lifeguard, tourist-police and warning-flag instructions. Sea conditions can change sharply during the monsoon and around river mouths.

Use authorised airport taxi counters or a verified app booking. Match the vehicle details and keep the route visible until the destination is clear.

Illegal drugs carry serious consequences. Decline unsolicited offers, and do not accept claims that a hotel, road or attraction is closed without checking an official source.

Dial 112 for an urgent police, fire, medical or rescue response.

Health considerations

Heat and humidity can be tiring even in the dry season. Move longer walks to the morning, drink regularly and use shade rather than waiting for obvious symptoms.

From June through September, intense rain can create slippery surfaces, poor visibility and local flooding. Avoid moving water, do not enter closed forest routes and leave extra time for essential transfers.

Use designated bathing areas and obey red flags or lifeguard directions. A calm-looking beach can still have currents, especially near river mouths or during unsettled weather.

Choose food with good turnover and visible hygiene, and use drinking water from a source you trust. Mosquito precautions are sensible in humid and wet conditions.

Dial 112 for urgent medical help and use current Directorate of Health Services information for non-emergency care.

Local laws & etiquette

Keep alcohol off beaches, and never drive a vehicle onto the sand. Follow lifeguard and tourist-police instructions, use designated bathing areas and remain on legal roads.

Do not damage or climb fabric, make graffiti, fly a drone, set a tripod or film commercially at ASI-protected monuments without permission. Read the current entrance notice because photography rules vary by site.

Follow the displayed rules for dress, shoes, head coverings and photography at churches, temples, mosques and shrines. Always give services and worship priority over sightseeing.

Stay on permitted routes in protected forests and sanctuaries, limit noise, never feed wildlife and carry litter out. Follow every Forest Department closure even if a tour has been sold.

Book only tourism operators registered for their activity, and retain the booking details.

Emergency information

Dial 112 for urgent police, fire, medical or rescue help. The Goa Tourism helpline is 1364 for visitor assistance that is not an immediate emergency.

Give the beach or village name, taluka, nearest landmark and a map pin. Saying only “north Goa” or “south Goa” is too broad for a rapid response.

For a sea incident, alert the nearest lifeguard as well as emergency services. Do not enter rough water to attempt an untrained rescue.

For a lost passport, contact Goa Police and your embassy or consulate. Keep copies of the identity page, insurance details and accommodation address offline.

During severe rain or a forest closure, follow current police, weather, airport and Forest Department notices rather than an old itinerary.
