How to get around Ahmedabad

Walk one old-city route. The walled core is best read on foot, but streets are shared with residents, worshippers, vendors and vehicles. Start early, carry little and use a guide if you want access-sensitive context.

Use Metro selectively. Ahmedabad Metro connects major east–west and north–south corridors and continues toward Gandhinagar. Use the operator's live planner for the exact station, interchange, fare and last service.

Use BRTS and buses for corridor travel. Janmarg BRTS and municipal buses can avoid some road friction, but they do not place every heritage site at the door. Check the current route and complete the last stretch carefully.

Use short authorised rides. Auto-rickshaws, taxis and app-based cabs are practical between clusters. Confirm the destination gate and fare method before departure.

Allow for weather and events. Heat shortens walking range; monsoon rain, Navratri, Uttarayan, processions, trade events and construction can change normal travel times.

Airport: Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport is at Hansol north of central Ahmedabad. The operator lists buses, taxis, app-based cabs, rentals and auto-rickshaws, but terminals and pickup arrangements change; check the airline and airport on travel day.

Rail: Ahmedabad Junction at Kalupur is the principal long-distance station and sits by the eastern old city. Sabarmati and other stations serve particular trains and directions. Use the exact station printed on the ticket.

Metro: consult Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation for the current map, operating hours, fare and interchange. A station name that sounds close may still leave a hot or traffic-heavy walk.

BRTS and AMTS: use the current Janmarg or municipal planner. Board at the signed platform, keep payment ready and avoid blocking doors with luggage.

Old city: cars are inefficient in many lanes. Agree on a pickup landmark outside the tightest fabric and keep your accommodation address offline in Gujarati and English.
