Discover Kerala

Introduction

Kerala follows the southwestern coast of India, between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats. Its 14 districts contain beaches, backwaters, densely settled midlands, plantations, forest reserves and high ranges within a state only about 120 kilometres across at its widest.

A strong first journey links Kochi's harbour history with the waterways around Alappuzha or Kumarakom, then adds one hill landscape if time permits. Yet Kerala is not one uniform tropical retreat. Malabar in the north, central Kerala, Travancore in the south and the Ghats carry different food, language, religious, political and performance histories. Malayalam culture meets long Indian Ocean connections to Arab, Jewish, Christian, Portuguese, Dutch and British worlds. The best trip leaves room for public ferries, markets, neighbourhood meals and living places between the named attractions.

How many days does Kerala need?

A focused Kochi, backwater and one-hill-area route needs about seven to ten days. Two weeks allows a slower central or north–south journey, but not every major destination.

When is the easiest time to visit?

December through February is the broadest dry-season window. It is also busiest. Monsoon travel can be rewarding but requires flexible plans and attention to official warnings.

Should I stay overnight on a houseboat?

Not necessarily. A public ferry, canoe or smaller day boat can show the waterways with less cost and often less impact. If staying aboard, choose a licensed or classified boat and ask about waste and safety systems.

Is Kerala only for backwaters and beaches?

No. Port history, food, performing arts, pilgrimage, literature, forests, plantations and politically active towns are central to the state.

Do I need a driver?

Rail, buses and ferries work well on many corridors. A driver is useful for highland transfers and scattered rural stops, but should complement rather than replace every local mode.

Is Ayurveda safe?

Use a currently accredited centre for wellness services and a qualified clinician for health decisions. Avoid any provider making unsupported cures or asking you to stop prescribed medicine.
