How to get around Kochi
Getting around
Walk by cluster. Fort Kochi and central Mattancherry reward walking, but heat, broken surfaces and traffic require attention. Ernakulam's main districts are more dispersed.
Use Metro on its corridor. Kochi Metro connects Aluva, central Ernakulam and Thrippunithura through named stations. It is useful for the airport-feeder connection and mainland movement, not a direct service to Fort Kochi or Mattancherry.
Cross by water when the route fits. Kochi Water Metro and Kerala State Water Transport operate different public services. Confirm the correct terminal, route, fare medium and last return through the operator. Weather and operational changes can alter service.
Use roads for the last mile. Buses, authorised app rides, taxis and auto-rickshaws fill gaps. Agree on the accepted fare method before departure and leave extra time at bridge bottlenecks.
Do not over-combine. A Fort Kochi–Mattancherry day is coherent. Adding an airport transfer, distant island and Thrippunithura simply because all carry a Kochi label usually creates a transport day.

Airport: Cochin International Airport is about 28 kilometres from central Kochi. It is not on the Metro line. Use the airport's current prepaid taxi, authorised ride, bus or KMRL feeder information; a feeder connection may link to Aluva Metro, but verify the active service before travel.
Rail: Ernakulam Junction and Ernakulam Town are separate stations. Confirm the station code on the ticket before choosing accommodation or a pickup.
Fort Kochi and Mattancherry: ferry services can avoid bridge traffic, but not every boat uses the same landing. Check whether your route serves Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, Vypin or another terminal and allow time to walk or ride onward.
Water Metro: terminals are modern and accessible in many respects, but the useful route depends on the day's network. Follow Kochi Metro Rail Limited's current map and notices rather than an old blog.
Monsoon planning: keep one road alternative, but do not assume roads will be faster during heavy rain. Follow official closures and never pressure a boat operator to sail in unsafe conditions.
