Kochi
Practical information for visiting Kochi
Connectivity & Internet
Cochin International Airport is the main air gateway and lies northeast of the city. The operator describes road transport, prepaid taxis, public buses and KMRL feeder arrangements; check the current terminal and pickup rules before arrival.
Long-distance trains use more than one Ernakulam station, and intercity buses use multiple facilities. Read the full station or terminal name rather than relying on “Kochi.”
Kochi Metro provides a strong urban rail spine from Aluva through Ernakulam toward Thrippunithura. Public ferries and Water Metro connect selected waterfront terminals and islands. These networks complement rather than replace one another.
Road links connect Kochi with the rest of Kerala, but urban traffic and bridge approaches make journey times variable. Keep same-day airport or rail connections conservative during monsoon weather and major events.
The harbour remains a working commercial port. Cruise and passenger access, when available, follows current port and operator controls.

Stay safe (2026 security update)
Use ordinary city precautions in markets, ferry queues, stations, festival crowds and busy waterfronts. Keep phones and wallets secure and carry only what you need.
Use official ticket channels, recognised guides and clearly identified transport. Confirm app-ride details and agree on the fare or meter method for other rides. An unsolicited “closed today” claim should be checked with the attraction or operator.
Road traffic, slippery monsoon surfaces and waterfront edges are common everyday risks. Cross carefully, keep back from unguarded quays and do not stand in vehicle or boarding lanes for photographs.
Heavy rain, flooding, lightning and rough coastal conditions can make a normal route unsafe. Follow IMD, Kerala disaster-management and transport-operator instructions. Do not enter floodwater or approach the shore for storm photographs.
India's integrated emergency number is 112.
Health considerations
Heat and humidity can cause illness even in the drier months. Start early, drink safe water, use shade and indoor breaks. Stop immediately for dizziness, confusion, headache or unusual weakness.
Choose sealed or reliably filtered water and freshly cooked food from busy premises. Avoid seafood that has not been kept cold and cooked thoroughly. Seek qualified care for persistent gastrointestinal illness or dehydration.
Use mosquito repellent and clothing coverage throughout the year, especially in wetter periods. Discuss routine and destination-specific vaccines, health risks and travel insurance with a qualified clinician before travel.
Do not touch dogs, macaques or other mammals. Report any bite or scratch promptly for medical assessment and rabies prevention.
Avoid floodwater, which can conceal open drains, contamination, electrical hazards and sharp objects. Call 112 for urgent police, fire or medical help.

Emergency information
Integrated emergency number: 112 connects police, fire, medical and other urgent assistance across India. Give the nearest terminal, jetty, station, junction, hotel or major landmark; “Kochi” alone covers a broad and divided area.
Save accommodation, insurer and essential medical contacts offline. Agree on a meeting point before entering a crowded festival, market or ferry terminal.
For Metro, Water Metro, ferry, airport or railway disruption, use the responsible operator's current channel. A reseller or hotel can help interpret a problem but does not replace the operator.
During heavy rain, high-tide flooding, lightning or rough coastal conditions, follow India Meteorological Department, Kerala State Disaster Management Authority and local instructions. Never bypass a barricade or enter standing water.
Foreign visitors should keep consular details and a passport copy available. Report a lost passport promptly and obtain a police record when required.
