Practical information for visiting Kerala

Connectivity & Internet

Cellular data and digital payments work well in cities and many towns, but signal can weaken in forest, mountain and backwater areas. Download tickets, maps, lodging details and the Malayalam place name before leaving a main centre.

A booking platform confirmation does not prove that a boat, guide, treatment centre or forest excursion is authorised. Keep the responsible operator's direct contact and licence or classification details where relevant.

Power cuts and weather disruption can affect remote stays. Carry a charged power bank when a phone holds the day's ticket or driver contact, but keep key addresses and emergency numbers offline as well.

Public Wi-Fi should not be treated as secure. Protect payment and identity information, and use official operator sites for reservations whenever possible.

Stay safe (2026 security update)

Use India's 112 number for urgent police, fire, medical or rescue help. In remote areas, also contact the accommodation, guide, forest gate or district control room.

Road risk is often more immediate than crime. Wear seat belts and helmets, avoid rushed night driving on unfamiliar hill roads and do not accept an exhausted driver for a long transfer.

Monsoon rain can produce flooding, high waves, lightning and landslides with little relevance to the weather at the previous stop. Follow India Meteorological Department and Kerala disaster-management warnings; do not enter closed roads, rough water or flooded crossings.

Use normal care with phones, money and bags in transport hubs, festivals and crowded markets. Book transport and boats through official or traceable channels.

At beaches, currents and surf vary sharply. A calm-looking shore is not proof of safe swimming; follow lifeguard and local warning signs.

Health considerations

Discuss personal travel health needs with a qualified clinician before departure, especially for pregnancy, chronic illness or remote forest travel. Carry insurance and enough regular medicine in original packaging.

Mosquito-borne illness, including dengue, occurs in Kerala. Use repellent, covering clothing and screened or air-conditioned sleeping space, and seek medical advice for fever during or after travel.

Heavy rain increases exposure to contaminated water and leptospirosis risk. Avoid wading through floodwater, protect cuts and follow Kerala Health Department advice during the monsoon and after flooding.

Heat and humidity can cause dehydration outside the main rains. Drink safe water, take shade and reduce exertion when symptoms begin.

Choose sealed or properly treated drinking water and food from busy, clean establishments. For Ayurveda, an accredited wellness centre is not a substitute for diagnosis or emergency care.

Local laws & etiquette

Temples, mosques, churches, synagogues and ritual grounds set their own dress, footwear, photography and entry rules. Some temple interiors restrict entry by faith or tradition; do not argue at the gate or photograph a refusal.

Ask before photographing people, homes, fishers, worship, Theyyam performers or funeral and pilgrimage activity. Public visibility is not blanket consent.

Use licensed alcohol vendors, boats, drivers and forest operators. Kerala Excise, Kerala Tourism and Kerala's forest authority rules take priority over an old travel post, and dry-day restrictions can affect licensed premises.

Do not remove archaeological fragments, plants, shells or wildlife material. Drones and commercial photography may require permission, especially near airports, protected monuments, forests and religious sites.

Clothing and public affection are read differently at a beach, village, shrine and urban arts venue. Observe the immediate setting rather than applying one rule to the whole state.

Emergency information

For urgent police, fire, medical or rescue assistance in India, call 112. Kerala also operates 108 ambulance services. Give the district, nearest named junction or landmark and a callback number because place names repeat.

For severe weather, use the India Meteorological Department's Kerala district, coastal and highway warnings. Kerala disaster-management control rooms publish current instructions; district control rooms can be reached through the state system during an incident.

In a forest, contact the assigned guide, range office or entry gate as well as 112. Do not leave an authorised route to search independently.

For boat trouble, use the operator's emergency process and alert local authorities. A classified houseboat should display identifying and safety information.

Keep insurance, medicine, accommodation and consular details offline. Specialist care is concentrated in larger cities, so remote hill and forest itineraries need a transfer plan.
