Sanjay Gandhi National Park
Last updated on October 20, 2026Why visit Sanjay Gandhi National Park
Few large cities contain a protected forest of this scale within their urban fabric. SGNP makes Mumbai's geology, monsoon water and biodiversity legible, while Kanheri adds a long human history shaped by the same basalt hills.
Fragmented operations are the friction. Decide whether the priority is a trail, Kanheri, a safari or a family recreation area, then verify that activity directly rather than arriving with a generic park plan.
Visit if you:
- want forest and archaeology inside Mumbai
- can begin early and follow protected-area rules
- are willing to choose one or two activities
Skip it if you:
- expect wildlife sightings on demand
- have not checked Monday closures or the current activity schedule

Visit responsibly
Wildlife sightings are not performances. Keep distance, stay in authorised vehicles or routes and never ask a driver to pressure an animal for a photograph.
Feeding macaques or deer draws them toward roads and people. Keep all food sealed and pack every wrapper out.
Kanheri is protected archaeology inside protected habitat. Do not touch carvings, climb cave fabric or leave markings on basalt.
Seasonal closures protect both visitors and ground made unstable by rain. A closed trail is not an invitation to find an unmarked alternative.

Plan your visit
Check the exact activity, not only the park gate
The official park site publishes separate hours and charges for activities and states that most attractions, apart from identified exceptions, close on Monday. Verify Kanheri, safari, boating, cycling and any guided route individually.
What is free
There is no general promise that entering the protected park or its attractions is free. Public information and views outside the boundary cost nothing; admission and activity charges are separate inside.
Carry official identification if required, use only authorised guides or vehicles and obey seasonal closures. Food, plastics, pets, noise and off-route movement can be restricted.

When to visit
November through February generally brings the easiest outdoor conditions. Mumbai's 1991–2020 normals show the heaviest monsoon rain from June through September, with warmer and more humid conditions around that season.
Sanjay Gandhi National Park is an outdoor forest visit whose trails, streams and waterfalls change radically during the monsoon; individual activities may close in rain or on Mondays. Check current site or municipal alerts before an exposed visit; monthly averages do not establish whether a trail, sea wall or road is safe today.
