A concise introduction to Amritsar, its geography, history and culture.
Introduction
Amritsar is the principal city of Majha in Punjab, founded around the sacred pool from which it takes its name. Sri Harmandir Sahib and the Akal Takht anchor a living Sikh pilgrimage complex, while nearby Jallianwala Bagh and the Partition Museum confront the violence of 1919 and the human consequences of 1947.
The old city's katras, bazaars, shrines and food specialists reward walking beyond the ceremonial approach. Ram Bagh, Gobindgarh Fort and Durgiana Temple add courtly, military and religious layers, while Attari belongs to a separate border outing. Amritsar is most meaningful when approached as a working sacred and historical city in India, not as a single golden façade or a ceremony collected on a checklist.

How many days does Amritsar need?
Two full days cover the sacred and memorial core plus one secondary city cluster. Add a third day for Attari, deeper history, food or a slower return to Harmandir Sahib.
When is the broadest travel window?
November through February is coolest, but winter fog can disrupt transport. February and March often balance walking conditions with fewer year-end pressures.
Is Golden Temple the formal name?
Sri Harmandir Sahib and Sri Darbar Sahib are institutional names. “Golden Temple” is the widely used English name.
Can anyone enter Harmandir Sahib?
Visitors are generally welcome when they cover the head, remove shoes, wash as directed and follow SGPC conduct and access rules.
Is langar free?
No charge is made, but “free meal” misses its meaning. Langar is a Sikh practice of equality and service; participate respectfully and avoid waste.
Can I walk to every attraction?
Walk the Harmandir Sahib–Town Hall–Jallianwala Bagh cluster. Use transport for Ram Bagh, the airport, Attari and other outer sites.
Is the Attari ceremony guaranteed?
No. Timing, capacity, identification and operation can change for security or official reasons. Confirm current arrangements.
What language is useful?
Punjabi is central, Hindi is widely understood and English is common in established visitor services. Keep addresses in writing.
