How to get around Amritsar
Getting around
Walk the sacred and memorial core. Harmandir Sahib, Jallianwala Bagh, the Partition Museum and old-city bazaars sit close together. Security lines, bare-foot rules within the complex, crowds and shared street traffic slow the route.
Use short road rides outside it. Auto-rickshaws, cycle-rickshaws, taxis and app-based services serve the wider city. Confirm the fare method, destination gate and pickup point before travel.
Keep Attari separate. The border ceremony is roughly 30 kilometres from central Amritsar and requires security margin, current access information and a return plan. Do not place it before a fixed flight or train.
Protect arrival time. The airport is northwest of the city and the railway station west of the core. Winter fog, major observances and peak traffic can extend transfers.
Ask about accessibility precisely. The old city is flat but congested; thresholds, queues, security routes and distances within large complexes still matter.

Airport: Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport is about 11 kilometres from the central city. Airports Authority of India currently lists prepaid taxis, commercial cab service and an SGPC bus to and from the Golden Temple; verify availability and pickup point on the day.
Rail: Amritsar Junction is the principal station. Confirm the exact station, train and live running information with Indian Railways, especially during winter fog.
Bus: state and private services use different stands and boarding points. Read the operator and terminal on the booking rather than asking only for “Amritsar.”
Old city: large vehicles are poorly suited to the inner lanes. Agree on a realistic luggage drop, keep hotel directions offline and do not assume the closest map point is reachable by car.
Border: use an authorised driver or current organised transport, carry required identification and leave photography decisions to security personnel. Access can change for operational reasons.
