Hawa Mahal site plan

The palace

From the bazaar, Hawa Mahal appears as a rhythmic wall of rose-coloured bays. White borders pick out arches and domed canopies, while small latticed windows turn the surface into a deep pattern of light and shadow.

Inside, the spectacle becomes intimate. Plain passages open onto tiny viewing chambers; ramps rise behind the ornament; glimpses of the street arrive through stone screens rather than broad windows.

The upper levels feel increasingly light and exposed. Looking back into the courtyard reveals how the famous façade is supported and how little depth separates the royal viewpoint from the city beyond.

Key highlights

Street façade

1799. A five-storey composition of red and pink sandstone creates Hawa Mahal’s crown-like profile.

Jharokhas and screens

Original design. Hundreds of projecting windows and lattices controlled views, shade and airflow.

Sharad Mandir

Lower level. A courtyard-facing ceremonial space introduces the interior route.

Ratan Mandir

Upper range. Coloured-glass details add a more intimate decorative layer behind the sandstone exterior.

Upper pavilions

Top storeys. Small chambers and terraces offer framed views over the walled city.

Courtyard elevation

Palace side. Ramps and galleries expose the practical structure behind the ornamental screen.
