Madurai
Madurai Culture
Tamil is the principal language of public and domestic life. Madurai's association with classical Tamil learning is important, but literary tradition and verifiable institutional history should not be collapsed into one literal founding story.
Temple city
Meenakshi and Sundareshwarar worship structures the historic centre through shrines, processions, markets and a yearly ritual calendar. Smaller temples and household practice extend that sacred geography beyond the main enclosure.
Food and trade
Morning tiffin, rice meals, snacks and late-evening dishes occupy different rhythms. Jasmine, textiles, jewellery and ritual goods link regional production with the temple economy. Ask vendors before photographing work.
Plural city
Muslim and Christian institutions form part of Madurai's history and present. A city guide should identify them precisely rather than treating the centre as culturally uniform.
Etiquette
Modest dress, patient queuing and attention to footwear, photography and restricted areas matter. During a procession, follow police and temple directions and do not step into the route for an image.
