Madurai
Discover Madurai
A concise introduction to Madurai, its geography, history and culture.
Introduction
Madurai is a major city of southern Tamil Nadu, organised historically around Meenakshi Amman Temple and the Vaigai River. Its temple towers rise over concentric commercial streets where worship, flower trade, jewellery, food and daily transport remain active.
The present city carries Pandya, Vijayanagara, Nayak, colonial and modern layers. Thirumalai Nayak Palace and the Gandhi Memorial Museum broaden a visit beyond the sacred core, while markets and restaurants reveal a living Tamil city rather than a preserved precinct. Madurai is one of India's oldest continuously significant urban centres, but claims of a precise age should be treated cautiously. Plan around heat, dense traffic and temple rules, and give the centre both an early morning and an evening.

Is Madurai only a temple destination?
No. Meenakshi Temple anchors the city, but palace architecture, the Gandhi Memorial Museum, food, markets, flower trade and neighbourhood life add distinct layers.
How many days are useful?
Two days allow the temple district at more than one hour, the palace, museum and an unhurried food or market theme.
When is the easiest season?
December through February usually offers the most manageable outdoor conditions. April and May can be severely hot, while October and November can bring disruptive rain.
Can everyone enter every temple area?
No. Sacred, security and ritual restrictions apply, and access can change. Follow current temple instructions without seeking an unofficial entrance.
Is photography allowed inside Meenakshi Temple?
Rules can change by zone and security policy. Use the current official notice and staff instruction; do not assume a phone or camera is permitted.
How far is the airport?
The district authority places Madurai Airport about 12 kilometres from the city. Travel time depends on traffic.
Can I walk from the railway station?
The station is close to the historic core, but heat, luggage and traffic may make a short authorised ride more practical.
