Discover Hyderabad

A concise introduction to Hyderabad, its geography, history and culture.

Introduction

Hyderabad is the capital of Telangana, set on the granite Deccan plateau around the Musi River. Founded by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah in 1591, its old city was organised around Charminar; Golconda Fort and the Qutb Shahi Tombs preserve the earlier royal centre. Asaf Jahi rule added palaces, hospitals, markets, railways and Osmania University, while Secunderabad developed through a separate cantonment history.

Today, heritage districts, Telugu and Urdu cultures, lake landscapes, pharmaceuticals, film and western technology corridors coexist across a large metropolis. UNESCO has recognised Hyderabad as a Creative City of Gastronomy since 2019, while its Qutb Shahi monuments remain on India's World Heritage Tentative List rather than the inscribed list. For visitors, the essential discipline is geographic: divide India's Deccan city into coherent daily clusters and leave generous time between them.

How many days are useful?

Three full days cover the Old City, Golconda–Qutb Shahi Tombs and the central museums without constant cross-city travel. Four or five allow deeper food, culture, Secunderabad, lake and modern-city threads.

Are Hyderabad's Qutb Shahi monuments World Heritage sites?

No. Golconda Fort, the Qutb Shahi Tombs and Charminar are on India's UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. That is not the same as inscription on the World Heritage List.

When is the easiest time to visit?

November through February offers the most comfortable broad window. April and May are hottest; June through September is the main monsoon, with substantial storm and road-disruption risk continuing into October.

Does the Metro go to the airport?

No operating Metro line reaches Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. Use the airport's current authorised taxi or bus information and allow ample road-transfer time.

Is Hyderabad walkable?

Individual clusters such as the Charminar bazaars can be explored on foot, but the metropolis is too dispersed for an all-walking visit. Combine focused walks with Metro, MMTS, buses or authorised road transport.

Is Hyderabad biryani the only local food to seek?

No. It is one important tradition within a much wider food culture that includes haleem, breakfast dishes, kebabs, sweets, Irani cafés, bakeries and community or seasonal foods.

Can Golconda and Charminar be combined quickly?

They can fit in one long day, but traffic, heat and the scale of Golconda make the result rushed. Separate them when possible and pair Golconda with the nearby Qutb Shahi Tombs.

Is Hyderabad the same as Secunderabad?

They are historically distinct twin cities within one metropolitan system. Secunderabad developed around a British cantonment and major rail junction north of Hyderabad.
