Agra
Agra Geography, Climate & Nature
Geography
Agra stands on the Yamuna in western Uttar Pradesh, within the broader Braj cultural region. The river is the strongest organising feature in the heritage landscape. The Taj Mahal occupies its right bank, while Mehtab Bagh and several tomb-gardens occupy or address the opposite side.
The main visitor corridor is compact only on a regional map. Agra Fort sits about 2.5 kilometres from the Taj, but bridge crossings make the trans-Yamuna gardens a separate road circuit. Sikandra lies about 10 kilometres toward the Agra–Delhi road.
Fatehpur Sikri changes the scale of the trip. It stands 36–40 kilometres west of Agra and belongs to a different rocky setting. Its planned precinct was built beside an artificial lake on the edge of the Vindhyan outcrops.
The district's nature sites lie farther again. Sur Sarovar Sanctuary is about 20 kilometres from Agra, and the National Chambal Sanctuary is roughly 70 kilometres away by the official state listing. Neither is a casual extension of a central monument day.

Climate patterns
Agra's official 1991–2020 normals show a sharply seasonal climate. Winter mornings can be cold and foggy, late spring becomes extremely hot, and the summer monsoon supplies most annual rain.
December through February is cool to mild. January's normal daily range is 7.4–22.2°C, and fog averages 5.4 days. Morning visibility may affect rail, road and monument plans.
March and April warm quickly. The normal maximum rises from 32.1°C in March to 38.4°C in April. Outdoor schedules need earlier starts well before the calendar reaches summer.
May and June are the harshest heat months, with normal maxima of 41.9°C and 41.1°C. Historical normals are not alerts; follow current India Meteorological Department and health guidance during the trip.
July through September brings the monsoon. Normal rainfall reaches 245.8 mm in July, 198.6 mm in August and 110.8 mm in September. Short intense rain can disrupt roads even when a whole day is not wet.
October and November become drier, but October afternoons remain warm. Air quality can also affect visibility and outdoor comfort. Check the current Central Pollution Control Board AQI rather than assuming cool weather means clear air.

Habitats & biodiversity
Agra's central heritage landscape is a managed river-and-garden system. The Yamuna, formal charbaghs and large walled compounds provide water, mature vegetation and open ground within a dense urban area.
Akbar's Tomb at Sikandra contains an extensive garden where blackbuck are present. They are part of a protected monument setting, not a petting attraction. Keep food packed away and follow staff instructions.
Sur Sarovar Sanctuary, often associated with Keetham Lake, lies outside the city centre. The official state listing identifies it with local and migratory birds, jackal, mongoose and hare. Its timing and facilities need a separate check before travel.
The National Chambal Sanctuary lies farther from Agra and protects a different river system. It is associated with gharial, mugger crocodile and several terrestrial mammals. Treat it as a planned excursion with an authorised local operator, not an improvised add-on.
Wildlife & birds
Wildlife around Agra is easiest to understand by habitat. Monument gardens support common urban birds and small animals; Sur Sarovar adds wetland and woodland; the Chambal corridor supports river species absent from the city centre.
Sikandra offers the simplest wildlife encounter within a heritage visit because blackbuck use Akbar's Tomb gardens. Watch from a distance, never feed them and do not leave the visitor route for a photograph.
Sur Sarovar is a bird-oriented excursion roughly 20 kilometres from Agra. Seasonal bird presence changes, so early hours and quiet observation are more useful than a fixed species checklist.
The National Chambal Sanctuary is about 70 kilometres away in the state's official access table. Its gharial and mugger habitat requires more planning than the distance suggests. Confirm current access, boat arrangements and weather before leaving Agra.
