How to get around Agra

Getting around

Use geography to choose transport. The Metro priority stretch connects Taj East Gate with Mankameshwar and serves the main Taj–Fort corridor. Walking works inside each monument precinct, not between every site.

Petrol and diesel vehicles stop 500 metres from the Taj Mahal. Battery buses and paid golf carts connect the eastern and western parking areas with the gates. Carry little, because the permitted-item rules and cloakroom stop can add time.

Auto-rickshaws, cycle rickshaws and taxis cover gaps from Agra Cantt and between central sites. Agree the fare or confirm the app booking before departure. A driver for the trans-Yamuna circuit saves repeated negotiations.

Fatehpur Sikri lies 36–40 kilometres west. Official sources list state buses and taxis, followed by authorised battery buses from the parking area to the monument gate. Allow for traffic and for time inside the complex.

Sikandra lies about 10 kilometres from the centre on the Agra–Delhi road. Combine Akbar's Tomb with nearby sites rather than crossing the city twice. Friday is useful for Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri or Sikandra because the Taj closes to ordinary visitors.

Metro

The operational priority stretch runs from Taj East Gate to Mankameshwar. Check the current UPMRC map before relying on extensions that remain under construction.

Rail

Agra Cantt is the principal station, but tickets may use Agra Fort, Raja ki Mandi, Agra City or Idgah. Read the exact station name before arranging a pickup.

Taj precinct

Road vehicles stop outside the protected approach. Use the eastern or western parking transfer and carry only permitted items. Wheelchairs are available at the entry gates, but the whole route should be checked in advance.

Outer sites

Use a taxi, organised vehicle or the current bus option for Fatehpur Sikri. Sikandra and the trans-Yamuna gardens also work better as grouped road circuits than isolated returns from the centre.

Walking and accessible travel

Major monument precincts provide broad paths, but thresholds, surfaces, distances and crowding vary. Verify the exact gate, wheelchair availability and final approach for every site.
