Uttar Pradesh
Practical information for visiting Uttar Pradesh
Connectivity & Internet
Air: Lucknow and Varanasi serve the broadest regional routes; several secondary airports support particular corridors. Confirm current service before building an itinerary around one.
Rail: The major cities are well connected, but station names and codes matter. Reserve long journeys and leave margin for winter fog or monsoon disruption.
Road: Intercity coaches cover the principal corridors, while a hired car is most effective for a defined cluster rather than a cross-state sprint.
Digital access: Cellular data is generally useful in cities and along main corridors, but can weaken in rural, riverine or forest areas. Save tickets, addresses, map pins and emergency information offline.

Stay safe (2026 security update)
Use ordinary precautions in crowded stations, markets, temple approaches and monument queues. Keep valuables secured and use official booking, prepaid or clearly identified transport channels.
Crowd movement is the most important local risk during major pilgrimages and festivals. Follow barriers and one-way routes, choose a meeting point, keep children close and never push against the direction set by officials.
Road conditions deserve attention. Avoid unnecessary night driving, and do not pressure a driver to maintain speed in fog, intense rain or dense traffic.
At ghats and riverbanks, use stable public access and do not enter deep or fast water. During the monsoon, currents and bank conditions can change quickly.
Use only authorised entry for forests and reserves. Dial 112 for urgent police, fire, medical or rescue assistance.
Health considerations
Heat is a major constraint from spring into early summer. Start exposed visits early, drink regularly, use shade and reduce activity when the Uttar Pradesh disaster authority or local administration issues a warning.
Winter brings a different problem: cold waves and dense fog can affect vulnerable travellers and disrupt road, rail and air movement. Carry warmer layers than a daytime forecast may suggest.
Monsoon rain increases the risk of flooding, waterlogging and mosquito exposure. Do not cross moving floodwater, and follow district instructions when river levels or roads are affected.
Air quality varies by city, weather and season. The Central Pollution Control Board publishes current readings; travellers with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions can use them to reschedule strenuous outdoor activity.
Use drinking water and food sources you trust, carry regular medication and seek qualified clinical advice for personal vaccination or health decisions. Dial 112 for urgent medical help.

Local laws & etiquette
Remove footwear and follow displayed rules for dress, photography, bags and access at temples, mosques, monasteries and other sacred places. Active worship and processions take priority over sightseeing.
Do not photograph cremations, grieving families or private rituals on the Varanasi ghats. Ask before taking a close portrait anywhere, even when a guide says a scene is photogenic.
At Archaeological Survey of India monuments, do not touch carvings, climb structures, write graffiti, use drones or professional equipment without permission, or enter closed areas.
Protected forests and tiger reserves use controlled gates, routes and vehicles. Remain with authorised staff and never collect plants, stone or wildlife material.
Use licensed premises for alcohol and keep it away from sacred precincts. Rules and local expectations can be stricter in pilgrimage cities.

Emergency information
Dial 112 for urgent police, fire, medical or rescue assistance anywhere in Uttar Pradesh.
Give the district, city or village, nearest road, station or ghat, and a map pin. A temple, reserve or river name alone may not identify the correct access point.
At a protected monument, airport, station, reserve or organised gathering, alert the nearest official staff member as well. Follow crowd-routing instructions and do not attempt an untrained rescue in traffic, moving water or forest.
For a lost passport, contact local police and the relevant embassy or consulate. Keep identification, insurance, tickets and accommodation details available offline.
During heatwaves, fog, heavy rain or flooding, follow current instructions from the district administration, Uttar Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority, police and the responsible transport or site authority.
