Introduction
Agra and the Taj Mahal are Uttar Pradesh's best-known pair, but they explain only one part of the state. The Ganga plain also holds Varanasi and newly inscribed Sarnath, Lucknow's Awadhi architecture and food, the pilgrimage cities of Ayodhya, Mathura–Vrindavan and Prayagraj, Buddhist Kushinagar and the Terai forests along Nepal.
Plan this part of India by corridor, not as one continuous sightseeing list. Agra's Mughal ensemble, Varanasi–Sarnath, Lucknow and Awadh, the central pilgrimage route, the eastern Buddhist circuit and Dudhwa each need an appropriate base. Two well-paced corridors reveal much more than a hurried sweep between monuments, stations and airports.

Frequently asked questions
Can I see Uttar Pradesh from one base? No. Agra, Lucknow, Varanasi, the eastern Buddhist sites and the Terai belong to separate corridors.
How long should I allow? A week suits one major corridor plus a compatible second base. Ten to fourteen days lets you connect two substantial regions without making every day a transfer.
When is the best time? November through February gives the broadest comfort, with the important warning that December and January fog can disrupt transport. October and March can also work well.
Is the state only for religious travel? No. Pilgrimage is central, but Mughal and Nawabi architecture, Buddhist archaeology, craft, food and Terai wildlife support very different journeys.
Do I need a car? Not for every intercity trip. Rail and intercity coaches cover major routes, while a hired vehicle helps with Fatehpur Sikri, the Buddhist circuit, reserve gates and other dispersed final stops.
Is Varanasi suitable for casual photography? Public views are plentiful, but cremations, grieving families and private rituals should not be photographed.
What languages are official? Hindi is the official language and Urdu is the second official language. Regional speech varies considerably.
Can I visit Dudhwa independently? Reserve access is controlled. Confirm the operating season, permit, authorised vehicle and correct gate before booking accommodation.
