Discover Varanasi

A concise introduction to Varanasi, its geography, history and culture.

Introduction

Varanasi, also called Kashi and Banaras, stands on the Ganga in Uttar Pradesh. Its long riverfront joins stepped ghats, temples, mosques, palaces, houses and dense lanes that remain active places of pilgrimage, work, mourning and neighbourhood life. The city is especially sacred in Hindu traditions and important to Jain practice, music, Sanskrit learning and Banaras brocade.

Sarnath, within the wider city, preserves the place associated with the Buddha's first sermon and became a UNESCO World Heritage property in 2026. Varanasi itself has belonged to UNESCO's Creative Cities Network for music since 2015, while its historic riverfront remains on India's World Heritage Tentative List. Visit by zone, begin early and approach ritual activity with consent and patience.

Is Varanasi the same as Banaras or Kashi?

They are names for the same city in different official, everyday and sacred contexts. Varanasi is the standard administrative English name; Banaras and Kashi remain widely used.

Is Varanasi a UNESCO World Heritage city?

No. The historic riverfront is on India's Tentative List, not the World Heritage List. Sarnath, within the wider city, was inscribed as a World Heritage property in 2026, and Varanasi has been a UNESCO Creative City of Music since 2015.

How many days are useful?

Three full days allow a dawn riverfront, the old city and Kashi Vishwanath precinct, Sarnath, and one deeper music, craft, museum or university experience without repeating long transfers.

When is the easiest weather?

November through February is generally best for walking, but winter fog and peak demand matter. April through June brings severe heat; July through September is the main monsoon.

Can I photograph the cremation ghats?

Do not photograph cremations or mourners. Observe quietly from where permitted and reject anyone selling supposed permission on another family's behalf.

Should I book Kashi Vishwanath access in advance?

Check the official temple trust or Kashi government portal for current darshan, aarti, item and accessibility rules. Do not rely on unofficial promises of guaranteed entry.

Are the ghats accessible?

Some upper promenades and the temple corridor are easier than older routes, but many ghats require long stairs and uneven lanes. Ask about the exact approach for your mobility needs.

Can I visit Sarnath and the ghats together?

Yes, but not as one compact walk. Sarnath needs a road transfer and at least half a day to understand the archaeological property, museum area and living monasteries.
