How to Get Around L'Aquila

L'Aquila is compact and walkable, with one complication.

The historic centre is small, flat by Italian hill-city standards and largely pedestrian. Some streets are still closed or diverted around building sites, and routes change as work progresses.

Buses cover the city and the surrounding villages.

The station is below the centre on a slow branch line and is of limited use.

A car is the practical way to reach Campo Imperatore, the Gran Sasso villages and the Navelli plain. The road up to the plateau is spectacular and closes in snow.

A cable car runs from Fonte Cerreto up to Campo Imperatore, which is the alternative to driving.

Parking is outside the walls; the centre is restricted.
