How to Get Around Sulmona

Sulmona is walkable, and the mountains around it are not.

The old town is flat, compact and crossed end to end on foot in twenty minutes along Corso Ovidio, which is largely pedestrian in the evenings.

Parking is easy by Italian standards, on the edges of Piazza Garibaldi and along the ring road, and mostly paid but cheap.

The station is about a kilometre and a half from the centre, on the flat, with local buses connecting.

Local buses run out to the villages of the valley — Pacentro, Introdacqua, Pettorano — but on school and work timetables.

A car is needed for the Maiella, the Gole del Sagittario, Scanno and the hermitage road, all of which are impractical otherwise.

Roads in the valley are good and flat; the roads up onto the massifs are narrow, steep and closed by snow in winter.
