Introduction
Courmayeur sits at 1,224 metres where the Dora Baltea begins, under the Italian face of the Mont Blanc massif, with roughly two thousand eight hundred permanent residents and many times that in season.
The Skyway Monte Bianco, opened in 2015, climbs in rotating cabins to Punta Helbronner at 3,466 metres, with the Mont Blanc massif, the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa visible from the top.
Two glacial valleys flank the massif here: Val Veny to the southwest and Val Ferret to the northeast, both walking country and both on the Tour du Mont Blanc.
The Sociétà delle Guide, founded in 1850, is the oldest alpine guides' association in Italy and still operates from the village.
The Mont Blanc tunnel, opened in 1965, runs 11.6 kilometres to Chamonix.
The old village is small, stone-built and almost entirely surrounded by resort development.
