The mountain seasons

Not festivals but the actual calendar: the ski season from December to April, the walking and climbing season from late June to September, and two shoulder months in which the village closes. Everything else here is arranged around those.

The Tour du Mont Blanc

Through July and August a steady stream of walkers on the circuit around the massif passes through Courmayeur, which is roughly its halfway point; the huts in Val Ferret and Val Veny fill accordingly.

The ultra races

In late August the Mont Blanc ultra-distance races pass through the village at night, and the whole place turns out to watch runners come off the mountain.

Sant'Orso and the valley calendar

The regional craft and cattle events — the Bataille des Reines in summer, the winter fairs down the valley — draw people from here as from everywhere in the region, and are the moments when Courmayeur behaves like part of the Aosta Valley rather than like a resort.

Ferragosto

Mid-August is the busiest fortnight of the summer, with the valleys closed to private cars and the shuttle buses running full; book anything you intend to do, including the Skyway, before you arrive.

Summer nights in the village

Through July and August the centre stays open late and the bars fill with walkers coming off the Tour du Mont Blanc, which is the friendliest the village gets all year.

Winter high season

Christmas, New Year and the February holidays are when the village is fullest, most expensive and least itself.
