Discover Aosta Valley

Valle d'Aosta is Italy's smallest and least populous region, tucked into the northwest corner where Italy, France, and Switzerland meet. Mont Blanc (Monte Bianco), the highest peak in the Alps, rises along its border with France, and the region is ringed by some of the Alps' most famous summits, including the Matterhorn (Cervino) on its border with Switzerland.

The region is officially bilingual, with French holding equal status alongside Italian -- a legacy of its historical ties to the Duchy of Savoy rather than mainland Italy. Aosta, the regional capital, preserves substantial Roman-era ruins, including a well-preserved theater and city gate, alongside a dense scattering of medieval castles across the valley that once guarded trade routes over the Alpine passes.
