Gerace's calendar is religious, with one summer festival that briefly transforms it.

Borgo Incantato

In late July the town is given over to street theatre, music and performance for several days, with the lanes, squares and church steps used as stages. It draws people from across the Locride and is by a wide margin the busiest the town gets. For a place with this many empty houses, filling them for a weekend is not a small thing.

Holy Week

The processions are old and take the whole town in, moving through streets that have not changed shape in centuries. Small, unadvertised, and among the better reasons to be here.

The patronal feasts

Several churches keep their own days, and in a town with this many churches that means a scattering of small feasts through the year, each belonging to its own quarter. They are the clearest surviving trace of how the town was once divided, and of how many people it took to divide it that way.

The Greek inheritance

Down the coast, the surviving Greko villages keep their own calendar, including festivals at which a Greek dialect descended from antiquity is still sung. They are small, hard to time and genuinely remarkable, and the tourist office in Locri is the practical way to find out when anything is happening.

Harvest

Olives from November, citrus and bergamot through the winter on the plain below. The Locride villages run their own food festivals around them, none of which are advertised outside the province.
