How to Get Around Gerace

Gerace is walkable and steep, and getting to it needs a car.

The town is small enough to cross in fifteen minutes, but it climbs continuously and the lanes are cobbled, stepped and narrow. Cars are kept to the edges.

Parking is below the town, and the walk up is part of the arrival.

There is no station. The Ionian coastal line runs through Locri, about ten kilometres away, and is slow.

Buses connect Gerace to Locri and the coast, but they are built around school and work hours and are of little use for a day visit.

A car is effectively required, both to reach the town and for Locri, the coast and the Aspromonte.

Roads in the Locride are adequate on the coast and slow inland, and can be closed after heavy rain when the fiumare run.

Gerace is on the quiet side of Calabria and takes some reaching.

The nearest station is at Locri on the Ionian coastal line, which is slow and infrequent; it connects south towards Reggio Calabria and north towards Catanzaro.

By road, Reggio is about an hour and a half over the Aspromonte or round the coast, and Catanzaro about two hours north.

The nearest airports are Reggio Calabria, with a thin schedule, and Lamezia Terme, about two hours away, which is the region's main airport.

Tropea, on the other coast, is roughly three hours by road — the Calabrian mountains make crossing the peninsula slower than the map suggests.

Buses serve the coast rather than the hill towns.

Coverage for mobile networks is good in the town, unreliable in the Aspromonte behind it.
