How to Get Around Calabria

Lamezia Terme International Airport, in central Calabria, is the region's busiest and best connected, with domestic routes to Rome, Milan, and other Italian cities and some seasonal international service. Reggio Calabria's Tito Minniti Airport and the smaller Crotone Airport on the Ionian coast serve the southern and eastern parts of the region respectively, both with more limited schedules.

Rail service runs along both coasts, connecting Reggio Calabria, Lamezia Terme, Cosenza, and Catanzaro, but the network is dated and slow by Italian standards, and it does not reach most inland villages or the national park interiors at all. A rental car is effectively necessary for visiting the Sila, Aspromonte, or Pollino interiors, and for reaching smaller coastal towns beyond the main rail stops; mountain roads can be narrow and winding, and drivers should watch for the sudden flooding that follows heavy rain in fiumara riverbeds.

Coverage for mobile networks is generally good along both coasts and in the region's larger towns, where 4G and 5G service is standard. Coverage becomes patchier in the mountain interiors of Sila, Aspromonte, and Pollino, particularly in valleys and on minor roads, so travelers planning to hike or drive through these areas should not assume a continuous signal. Wi-Fi is common in hotels and cafes in tourist towns but less reliable in smaller inland villages.
