Tropea Events

Tropea's calendar is religious at its core with a heavy summer season laid over it.

The Madonna di Romania

The patronal feast falls in early May and is the town's own. The icon is carried through the streets, there are illuminations and a fair, and the whole town turns out. It happens before the season starts, which is precisely why it still belongs to the residents.

Summer on the cliff

From June to September there are concerts, open-air events and food nights in the squares and along the Corso, and boats run daily to the Aeolian Islands. Ferragosto, in mid-August, is the peak and the beach below the town is at its fullest.

The onion

The cipolla rossa is harvested through late spring and summer, and the villages along the coast run festivals around it, with Spilinga's 'nduja festival in August the best attended of them. They are small, local and a much better way to eat than anything on the seafront.

Summer nights on the water

Through July and August the boats running to the Aeolian Islands add evening departures timed to watch Stromboli erupting after dark from the sea. It is a long trip and it is the most memorable thing available from this coast.

Christmas and Easter

Nativity scenes in the churches and Holy Week processions through the old town, both quiet and well attended in a town that is otherwise empty in winter. Holy Week here keeps the Spanish-influenced form common through the south, with hooded confraternities and a night procession along the cliff.
