Caprarola in Lazio - Goparoo

Caprarola discovery guide

Why visit Caprarola the smart way

Caprarola is a village of about five thousand people on a tufa spur in the Cimini hills, and it is almost entirely overshadowed — literally — by one building. The Villa Farnese was begun as a fortress in 1530 by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese to a design by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, and the work stopped after only four years when the cardinal was elected pope as Paul III.

The friction is access. There is no railway in the town, the palace sits at the top of a steep village, and a comune of five thousand has little else arranged for visitors.

So drive or take the bus from Viterbo, and give the day to more than the palace. Lake Vico is immediately west, Monte Fogliano rises in the comune, and Bomarzo is near enough to pair — its Sacred Grove may have been built as a deliberate answer to exactly the symmetry you will have just walked through.

When to visit Caprarola

April to June is the best window: the Cimini are green, the village is comfortable and the palace's gardens are at their best.

Weekends in those months bring the day-trip crowd from Rome and Viterbo, so a weekday is better.

Summer is milder here than on the Lazio plain, thanks to altitude and the Cimini woodland, which makes it a reasonable escape from the heat.

September and October are the second strong season, and the hills turn.

Winter is cold by Lazio standards — climate zone E with 2,343 degree-days — and the village is very quiet.

27 January marks the Yad Vashem recognition of the Brunetti family, in 2005.

How to experience Caprarola

Walk up to the Villa Farnese

The large Renaissance mansion that dominates the surrounding countryside, begun as a fortress in 1530 to Antonio da Sangallo the Younger's design.

Notice that it was meant to be defensible

The project halted after four years, when the cardinal who commissioned it was elected pope in 1534 as Paul III — and what resumed was a palace on a fortress plan.

Recognise it from the screen

It has stood in for grander places in Medici: Masters of Florence, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and The Two Popes.

Go west to Lake Vico

The volcanic lake immediately beside the town, in the same Cimini hills.

Read the name

From Latin Capreae, for the goats, and the dialect Rola, the place with the stalls where shepherds sheltered their flocks.

Pair it with Bomarzo

Order here, deliberate disorder there — and the Sacred Grove may have been built precisely as an answer to this.

Where to find authentic cultural and historical character

Caprarola is a small hill village that a great family used as a stage, and it has lived with the consequences ever since.

The disproportion is the first thing anyone notices: five thousand people, and a palace built to represent the wealth and power of the Farnese at their height, with a pope in the family and a new duchy to administer.

The village's own identity is older and plainer — a shepherds' place named for goats and for the stalls where flocks were sheltered — and much shorter than the region's, since stable settlement only began around the eleventh century.

Its architectural quality is recognised rather than assumed: the beauty of the place was the subject of studies by Prince Charles's School of Architecture in 1995.

And there is a civic memory that the town has chosen to keep: the twenty-four members of the Veneziano family sheltered here through eight months after September 1943, and the Yad Vashem recognition of the Brunettis in 2005.

Responsible travel tips

Five thousand people live under this palace. The Villa Farnese dominates a small working village on a steep tufa spur. Park where you are told, keep off private lanes, and remember the town is not an approach road to a monument.

The Cimini are a historic forest. These hills were the Selva Cimina, impassable enough in antiquity to keep settlement out until the eleventh century. What remains of that woodland, on Monte Fogliano and around Lake Vico, deserves to be walked carefully rather than driven through.

Lake Vico is a volcanic lake with a small catchment. Use established access points.

Stay, or at least eat, in the village. A comune of five thousand that receives visitors for a single building sees very little of the money unless people stop.

The 1943–44 story is not a tourist attraction. The sheltering of the Veneziano family, and the Yad Vashem recognition of the Brunettis in 2005, are civic memory. Treat them as such.

Pair rather than concentrate. Bomarzo, Bagnaia and Lake Vico spread a day's visitors across a province instead of onto one staircase.

Travel cost levels in Caprarola

What each level of spending buys in Caprarola

$BudgetA room in the village, a full meal, the village streets and the views over the Cimini free
$$$Mid-rangeA B&B, dinner with Viterbese wine, entry to the Villa Farnese and its gardens
$$$$$LuxuryA country place near Lake Vico or in the Cimini,+/night; there is no luxury tier in the village itself

Caprarola is inexpensive because it is a working village of five thousand rather than a resort, and because most visitors come for a few hours and leave. Staying the night is both cheap and the thing almost nobody does.

Two EU rules govern what you are actually charged. You must be clearly informed of the total price, including all taxes and additional charges. And traders in the EU are not allowed to charge extra for paying by credit or debit card — the exceptions are American Express and Diners Club cards and corporate cards, where any fee may not exceed what processing actually costs the trader.

The tiers above describe what each level of spending buys here, not quoted rates. No published rate card covers a comune this size, and prices move sharply with the season.
