Nemi's attractions are a lake, a lost temple and a museum of what burned.
Lake Nemi fills a volcanic crater that the comune's own boundaries entirely enclose, and the historic centre looks down into it from a panoramic position.
On the northern shore, beneath the cliffs of the modern town, stood the Temple of Diana Nemorensis — erected around 300 BC, though worship of Diana here flourished from at least the sixth century BC, and a famous place of pilgrimage in the Italian peninsula.
The Museo delle Navi Romane holds the remains of the hulls of Caligula's two ships. The surviving remnants from the excavations, and replicas, are displayed in the Museo Nazionale Romano at Palazzo Massimo in Rome.
And the town itself has a few late medieval to eighteenth-century churches and the Castello Ruspoli.
