How to Get Around Tivoli

The town centre is compact, steep and walkable, and Villa d’Este is a few minutes from the main square. The other two sites are not walkable from it and that catches people out.

Villa Adriana is about six kilometres away on the plain, reached by a local bus from the centre in roughly twenty minutes, or by taxi. Villa Gregoriana is on the opposite side of the old town, a ten-minute walk but a steep one.

From Rome, trains run from Tiburtina to Tivoli in about an hour, and Cotral buses leave from the Ponte Mammolo metro terminus, which is often quicker. The bus also stops near Villa Adriana on request, which is worth knowing if that is your first stop.

Driving is straightforward but parking in the upper town is limited; there is space near the villa entrances and on the approach roads.
