It began as the fishermen's church and the record says so plainly. The denomination San Pietro dei Pescatori originates in the tithes of the proceeds of fishing on feast days, collected in the thirteenth century for the construction of the first religious structure here.

Noli dates the building to that century too. Its own record describes the church as erected in the thirteenth century and subsequently remodelled in the seventeenth.

In 1572 the cathedral title arrived. It was transferred from San Paragorio, which had been the first cathedral of the borgo and of its diocese and stood outside the walls. Only at that point did the ancient appellation change into the dedication to the apostle Peter.

The promotion rebuilt a good part of the church. To that period belong the adjoining bell tower, the perimeter walls of the church and the internal pillars — which is to say that the thirteenth-century fishermen's church survives mainly as a footprint.

Transformation continued through the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The building was transformed from the second half of the sixteenth century; the high altar is of 1679.

And the diocese it was promoted for no longer exists by itself. The church is today the co-cathedral of the diocese of Savona-Noli, its parish part of the vicariate of Finale Ligure.
