Varigotti

Varigotti Culture

The name is the culture, and it is older than any proof of it. Varigottesi were traditionally called saraceni. The bay is the baia dei Saraceni. One of the hamlets formed when the population moved west is Ca' de Mori, a structure clinging to a promontory that the record suggests may have been an Arab fort, on the evidence of its building techniques. The proposal that the place was a mainland base of the Saracens of Frassineto is explicitly recorded as lacking real confirmation, and the honest version is that the nickname is attested and the occupation is not.

It is a saint's town twice over. The patron is San Lorenzo and there are two churches to him — the old one on the promontory, which held the parish first, and the Baroque one on the Aurelia that replaced it. The oratorio di Sant'Antonio Abate beside the parish church is the seat of its confraternity.

Writers and filmmakers have left their names on the map here. The novelist Gina Lagorio has a beach named for her; the mole is named for the director Renato Castellani. The opening chapters of V. A. Kočetov's novel Ma, insomma, che cosa vuoi? are set in Varigotti and around it, and the final scenes of the Rai 1 series Blanca were filmed at the Punta Crena tower in December 2021. The television presenter Michelle Hunziker is among more recent regulars.

And the Saracen story reached Donald Duck, in Latin. The Disney-Mondadori album Paperino e la notte del Saraceno is largely set in Varigotti and especially at the hilltop tower, and was also published in Latin as Donaldus Anas atque nox saraceni. A ceramic by the sculptor Felice Mina, Le Quattro Stagioni, is kept in the Filippo apartment building.
