San Basso

On 4 August the statue of the town's patron is carried out of the borgo and put aboard a fishing boat, and the whole fleet follows it out to sea and back, decorated and sounding horns. It is the fishing town's own day and is the best thing in the Termoli year.

The summer season

From late June the beaches, the clubs and the borgo bars run at full capacity through to the first week of September, and the population roughly doubles.

Incendio del Castello

In mid-August the castle is lit with pyrotechnics from the sea in a re-enactment of the Ottoman raid of 1566, watched from the beaches on both sides of the headland.

The fish

Not an event but a rhythm: the fleet lands in the early morning and again in the late afternoon, and the quayside sale is open to anyone who turns up. It is the most reliable free spectacle in the town and nobody treats it as one.

Christmas in the borgo

The old town does a nativity trail through the lanes, staged in doorways and cellars by residents, which is small, entirely local, and the only time the borgo is busy in winter.

Summer nights in the borgo

Through July and August the lanes inside the walls fill after dark with people eating outside, and the borgo becomes the town's open-air living room until well past midnight.

Markets

The weekly market outside the walls draws the villages of the Biferno valley, and is where the inland province comes down to the coast.
