Introduction
Alberobello is a small town of about 10,500 people on the Murgia plateau in central Puglia, in the karst country known as the Valle d'Itria.
Its trulli are concentrated in two districts on either side of the modern centre. Rione Monti, on the western slope, has around a thousand of them, terraced up the hill in rows and given over almost entirely to shops, bars and rented rooms. Aia Piccola, to the east, has some four hundred and remains mostly residential.
The set pieces are the Trullo Sovrano, the only two-storey trullo ever built, and the church of Sant'Antonio at the top of Rione Monti, which is a working parish church built in the trullo form in the 1920s.
The whole place is walkable in a morning, which is exactly why so many people treat it as a stop rather than a stay.
