Discover Trento

Trento sits at about 190 metres on the Adige, hemmed in by mountains, with roughly a hundred and eighteen thousand inhabitants.

It is the capital of the autonomous province of Trento, which is Italian-speaking, and shares a region with the German-speaking province of Bolzano without much resembling it.

The Council of Trent met here between 1545 and 1563, in the cathedral and in Santa Maria Maggiore, and defined Catholic doctrine and practice for the next four centuries.

The Castello del Buonconsiglio, seat of the prince-bishops who ruled here from 1027 to 1803, holds the Cycle of the Months in its Torre Aquila — a Gothic fresco of the medieval year that is among the finest secular paintings anywhere.

Piazza Duomo has a Neptune fountain and frescoed house fronts, and MUSE, Renzo Piano's science museum, opened in 2013 on the site of a tyre factory.
