Trento Film Festival

Held every spring since 1952, the oldest mountain film festival in the world, filling the city with climbers, film-makers and a large and opinionated audience for ten days. It is the event that most defines the city's self-image.

Feste Vigiliane

In late June, the patronal festival: costumed processions, a mock trial, a market and the Palio dell'Oca, a raft race down the Adige. It is local, slightly daft and genuinely popular.

The Christmas markets

From late November, smaller and more manageable than Bolzano's, spread over two squares and aimed as much at residents as at visitors; the city stays usable through them, which is not true an hour north.

The Rotaliano vintage

September and October bring the Teroldego harvest on the gravel plain north of the city, with cellar openings and tastings, and the Trentodoc producers run their own tasting weeks in the same months.

The mountain seasons

Skiing on Monte Bondone and in the Brenta from December, and walking from May, and the city empties into both at the weekend; the bus timetable changes with them rather than the other way round.

Market and the weekly rhythm

The city market runs in Piazza Alessandro Vittoria and the surrounding streets, and the autumn produce fairs in the valleys around — apples in the Val di Non, cheese in the Val di Fiemme — are how the province actually sells itself to itself.

Festival dell'Economia

A large public economics festival held each spring, unexpectedly well attended and a good indication of what this city thinks is interesting.
