Florence Events
Florence's calendar has two shapes. A handful of traditional fixed points concentrate enormous crowds into single days — the Scoppio del Carro on Easter morning in the square between the cathedral and the baptistery, the Calcio Storico Fiorentino in Piazza Santa Croce in June, and the feast of San Giovanni, the city's patron, on 24 June. Their dates move with the religious calendar rather than sitting on fixed ones, so they are worth confirming against the city's own listings before booking around them.
Underneath that sits a dense, year-round programme the Comune publishes itself, including a standing category for folk traditions and historical re-enactments — which the city describes as representing “the heritage and the memory of a community” rather than as entertainment laid on for visitors. That listing runs well beyond the city boundary into the metropolitan area, and much of what it carries is genuinely local: the Feast of Santa Reparata in October, the thousand-year-old Fair of San Luca, the grape festival at Impruneta, a castle-siege re-enactment at Calenzano, the Palio delle contrade at Bagno a Ripoli.
The practical consequence is the same either way. Florence's events concentrate people into particular days rather than spreading them across a season, so a badly chosen date costs more here than a badly chosen month — a single evening can close streets across the centre, and a procession can make a planned walk impossible. The Comune's own events pages are the listing to check; third-party calendars go stale quietly.
