Greve in Chianti
How to get around Greve in Chianti
Getting around
The town itself is walkable and small. Piazza Matteotti, the Propositura di Santa Croce at its vertex, the Museo di San Francesco and the Museo del vino are all within a few minutes of each other on foot.
Montefioralle is a walk, and should be. It stands a short distance from Greve on the hill above, and arriving on foot is both pleasanter and easier than trying to park in a borgo whose streets are narrow, fully paved and lived in.
Everything else needs a vehicle. The comune covers 169.38 square kilometres and the castles, pievi and viewpoints are spread across it: Verrazzano about 2 km out on a hill at 348 m, Strada in Chianti about 10 km away at around 300 m, and the higher ground running up to 892 m.
The road is the via Chiantigiana, which links Florence with Siena through the Chianti. Greve is also connected onward to the A1 and to the main Florence–Siena road.
Historically this was never an isolated place: even in antiquity it was well connected by secondary roads to the Via Volterrana and the via Francigena, and the old network gave easy access to Florence and to markets such as Figline.

Cost compares the options for each route rather than quoting a fare: inexpensive means the price is not a factor in planning, moderate cost means a real line in the budget, and the expensive option is one worth weighing against the alternative. Fares change from year to year; the ranking between them does not.
Distances from Greve. Florence is about 31 kilometres north; Siena about 42 kilometres south. The via Chiantigiana connects the two through the Chianti, and Greve sits on it.
Inside the comune. Montefioralle is a short walk uphill from the centre. The Castello di Verrazzano is about 2 kilometres from the centre of Greve, on a hill at 348 metres. Strada in Chianti, the largest frazione, is about 10 kilometres from the capoluogo at roughly 300 metres, on the Chiantigiana itself. Panzano in Chianti is also within this comune and has its own page here.
Expect gradient, not distance, to govern your day. The comune runs from 130 metres at Ferrone to 892 metres at Monte San Michele. Ten kilometres on a Chianti ridge road is not ten kilometres on a plain.
Parking is the practical problem. Greve is a town of 13,321 people on a through route, and the square is both the sight and the place everyone wants to leave a car.
For anything scheduled, ask the comune. Local transport falls under its Mobilità e trasporti services, and no timetable is published in the sources behind this page — so none is asserted. The switchboard is 055 85451.
