Panzano in Chianti

Practical information for visiting Panzano in Chianti

Connectivity & Internet

Panzano is a frazione of about 1,161 people on a ridge, and its connections are road connections. It sits on the via Chiantigiana, the route that strings the Chianti villages together between Florence and Siena, with Greve in Chianti a few miles north and Radda and Castellina southward.

Its second road is the one that makes it a crossroads rather than a stop. The strada dei poggi runs the watershed and joins San Casciano in Val di Pesa to Volpaia through the Castello delle Stinche — which is to say Panzano connects the Pesa side of the Chianti to the Greve side without going down into either valley.

Visit Tuscany places it exactly halfway between Florence and Siena, which is the single most useful thing to know when planning a day around it.

There is no rail connection and no published bus service. Nothing read for this page — the comune included — publishes a timetable serving Panzano.

Stay safe (2026 security update)

No crime figure, alert or security advisory is published for Panzano by the comune of Greve in Chianti or by any other source read for this page. It is a frazione of about 1,161 people and nothing read suggests a safety problem; nothing read establishes one either way, and no figure is invented here.

The real hazards here are the roads. The strada dei poggi along the watershed and the via Chiantigiana are narrow, winding and shared with cyclists, who use the panoramic ridge route precisely because it is panoramic. The Passo di Campana junction below the village is where they meet.

Panzano Alto is a pedestrian proposition. One gate, one street, uneven surfaces and houses opening straight onto it.

Policing is from Greve. The Polizia Municipale of the comune is at Via di Colognole 63/65, 50022 Greve in Chianti; the comune switchboard is 055 8545 1. There is no municipal office at Panzano.

Health considerations

No pharmacy rota, clinic listing or health service for Panzano is published by the comune of Greve in Chianti or by anything else read for this page. The comune does not publish a pharmacy rota at all.

Plan on Greve for anything medical. Panzano is a frazione with no municipal services of its own; the comune's seat and services are at Piazza Giacomo Matteotti 7/8, Greve in Chianti, switchboard 055 8545 1.

The village is steep and uneven. Panzano Alto is reached by one climbing street and the surfaces are old; the walk from Campana at the pass up to the castle is a real ascent, not a stroll.

Sun and exposure are the seasonal issue. At about 510 metres on an open ridge with a west-facing slope, there is little shade on the walls or in the Conca d'Oro.

Emergency information

The European emergency number is 112, and it is the number to use in Italy for police, ambulance and fire.

Everything municipal is at Greve, including the police. Comune di Greve in Chianti, Piazza Giacomo Matteotti 7/8, 50022 Greve in Chianti (FI), switchboard 055 8545 1; Polizia Municipale, Via di Colognole 63/65, 50022 Greve in Chianti. Panzano has no office of its own.

If you are at the pieve, the address to give is Via S. Leolino 1, 50022 Panzano in Chianti (Firenze). The Comunità di San Leolino publishes that address and the email info@sanleolino.org, and no telephone number.

No local emergency service, civil-protection contact or alert system specific to Panzano is published, and none is asserted here.
